HUMANE SOCIETY WINE TASTING FUNDRAISER A SUCCESS.

DARIEN, GA, September 12, 2008
The Humane Society of South Coastal Georgia (HSSCG) held a wine tasting event at Waterfront Wine & Gourmet yesterday evening to raise funds for the shelter. Eighty-five animal lovers attended the lively event which spilled over into Broad Street in Darien. "We are pleased at the level of support in Darien," said Tina Bostic, volunteer President of the Board of the Humane Society.

The evening included live music by the Corn Eyed Trout, a local blues and folk group. Attendees sampled six tasty wines along with cheese and fruit. The evening was sprinkled with fundraising opportunities including a membership drive, raffle ticket sales and dog collar sales. "We were able to raise over $2,700 toward the shelter's operational expenses," said Hannah Tostensen, volunteer Board Member.

This community fundraising event is one of many leading up to the organization's "Howl-o-Ween Benefit" on October 29 where the Humane Society of South Coastal Georgia will officially kick off its capital campaign to raise $1,000,000 to build a new shelter facility. Since 1967, HSSCG has been 100% a donor funded no-kill animal adoption center. "We take in, treat, spay and neuter and find adoptive homes for the lost, abused and abandoned animals of Brantley, McIntosh and Glynn Counties," said Bostic. In 41 years, the shelter has found adoptive homes for 12,000 animals. "Over the years, the shelter facility has become inadequate to continue our mission," explained Bostic. In September 2007, the Humane Society Board voted to embark on fundraising efforts to build a new shelter.

Prior to the official capital campaign kickoff, the Board has been hosting community events like the wine tasting to remind the community about the valuable service they provide. "We are the only no-kill shelter in South Coastal Georgia," said Tostensen. Through advance fundraising efforts, private donors have pledged nearly $200,000 toward their $1,000,000 goal.

"We are so grateful for the support of local businesses like Waterfront Wine & Gourmet and all the generous donors in the community," said Bostic, "it's this kind of support that has kept us going for 41 years and saved the lives of 12,000 animals in need."

The Humane Society of South Coastal Georgia is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit charity dedicated to sheltering lost, homeless and abandoned animals. HSSCG is a no-kill animal adoption center that does not receive funds from the national Humane Society and relies on contributions from the local community in order to operate. The HSSCG is always accepting individual and corporate memberships, donations and volunteers.
