Community with a Great Big Heart Saves a Little One

Lucky, a 3-month-old mixed-breed puppy, was found in the road. He was attacked by another animal, and had infected puncture wounds and a broken back. The family that found him brought him to the Humane Society and he was treated.

The doctors at Island Animal Hospital on St. Simons Island discovered Lucky had a serious heart condition that, without expensive treatment, would be fatal. Doctors at Affiliated Veterinary Specialists in Jacksonville diagnosed him with pulmonic stenosis, which means that a valve in his heart was too narrow to pump blood properly.

The Humane Society campaigned on Lucky’s behalf and, thanks to incredibly generous donors in our community, in ONE DAY raised enough money for Lucky’s treatment. On May 6, doctors at the University of Florida’s Small Animal Hospital performed a balloon valvuloplasty that opened the valve in Lucky’s heart.

Today, Lucky is the energetic puppy he deserves to be and, if he understood, we’re sure he’d give many hearty yaps of thanks to all of the wonderful doctors and people in our community who opened their hearts and their wallets for his cause. Lucky is an example of the many animals in need in and around the Golden Isles.
